RED
By John Logan
at Lakeshore Players Theatre
Mark Rothko, the legendary abstract expressionist, has just received the most significant commission in modern art history: a series of murals for New York’s iconic Four Seasons Restaurant. For two years, he works obsessively in his Bowery studio alongside his young assistant, Ken. As the two wrestle with questions of art, purpose, and integrity, Ken finds his voice—challenging Rothko in ways that shake the artist to his core. Raw, provocative, and intensely human, RED is a searing exploration of ambition, legacy, and the high cost of creation.
“- a fantastic production with wonderful performances and gorgeously, messily detailed design observed up close in the intimate space of Lakeshore's black box theater…beautifully paced and staged… It's like we're crammed into Rothko's studio watching him work and muse and rage, which is almost uncomfortable at times but also riveting. ” - Cherry & Spoon
